Yogi Damga Rinpoche originally became a monk at the age of 17. He received teachings from many great Masters and accumulated the 400,000 preliminaries in retreat, in the Drikung Kagyu tradition. He accomplished the 5-fold Mahamudra and the 6 Yogas of Naropa practices and likewise did an extended Three-Kayas retreat according to the Ratna Lingpa Terma tradition.
In spite of the conditions of Tibet during the Cultural Revolution, Damga Rinpoche sustained his practice. In later years, Damga Rinpoche did retreat with his spiritual consort (they lived in adjacent huts). They did not have any children together but engaged in retreat simultaneously for much of their lives.
In 1996 Damga Rinpoche passed away and a few weeks later, his consort followed. Those who knew Yogi Damga considered him a truly great Yogi.
Garchen Rinpoche once told Lama Gape that the only perfect practitioner of Secret Mantra at the time was Damga Rinpoche.
